CWC Reflection

I think I was successful in my CWC since I couldn’t get in contact with my client very often during the creation of the documents. I didn’t have a guide so I just made up all the documents with what I thought was appropriate and what reflected well on the organization. I think I was really successful with the design documents that I created. I liked not having restrictions on my designs and that I didn’t have to go off of someone else’s previous work.

The writing documents were not as successful as the design documents because I didn’t have that guide from my client of what I should write. I wasn’t familiar with the details of the organization when I first got in contact with Mary, but I did research on their website and talked to coaches to gain a better understanding of the organization. I think the hardest document for me to write was the email letter to their sponsors. I didn’t know how to write it without sounding needy. But I still feel like I accomplished not sounding that way, but I’m sure it will be difference once I get feedback from my client.

The one challenge that I faced was not being in contact with my client as much as I wanted to be. I overcame them by just being creative and not having someone what me what I can and can’t design. Like I said before it would’ve been nice to have that structure when it came to the writing documents, but for the design ones I liked creating everything myself.

Axis Freeride’s primary audience is athletes and parents. Their secondary audience is sponsors and donors. I feel like I made my documents for the audience as a whole. They are very informative documents, some less formal than others, but I think they all look professional enough to go to the sponsors and donors. And they are easy enough to read and understand for the parents and athletes. I feel like my documents really make Axis Freeride shine and stand out from all the other freeride organizations in Park City.

If I could do it over again I would’ve definitely gotten in contact with Mary earlier than I did. I would’ve met with her more times than I did and gotten as much information about the organization as I could from her. I think my timing of getting in contact with her was off. She is a mother and an active member of Park City and was very busy with fall events when I contacted her.

If I could do any of my documents over again I think it would be the third flyer. It’s too simple and it is the only one that doesn’t look professional. I think I would search online to find examples of flyers to help give me a base idea of what I could do for my flyer.

I think I deserve an A-. I feel like I worked really hard for what I had and it was hard knowing that no matter how many times I called or emailed Mary she probably wasn’t going to get back to me. I think I did a good job at creating documents from scratch for an organization that I wasn’t fully familiar with.

CWC Interview

1. The interview went well. Mary was very willing to help me out and give me everything that I needed for the project. She was excited and that made me excited to work for her and create something new for the organization.

2. I prepared by knowing that I needed for the project instead of being unprepared and not knowing what to tell her. She appreciated that I was prepared.

3. One thing that went well was that I didn't know if she would be willing to give me everything that she needed and the fact that she gave me everything really helped. Another thing was that since she was excited about what the final result would be it made me excited to work for her and the organization and I'm doing dreading the project :)

4. The only thing that could've gone better was the communication before the interview. Mary had been involved with a couple community events and wasn't able to respond in a timely fashion so that was really annoying. I had to stalk her, I felt bad, but at least she responded and was still willing to give me everything that I needed.

5. The questions were very useful because they helped me get to know Mary's organization and what they're all about. Also the questions help me learn what Mary expected.

6. All my questions were pretty useful. It was a good interview.

The 6 Steps

Technically professional writing is an art when you think about a professional document according to the 6 steps, but I on the other hand don't consider professional writing an art.

I understand that professional writing includes the Understanding Comics and also all forms of writing where the author is getting paid, but when I think of professional writing I just think about legal documents and just boring professional documents that have to be written by professional writers.

To me stuff like that I don't consider art. I know art comes in many forms, but this is one thing that I just don't consider art.

I need to improve my professional writing by being more professional. Right now I am too relaxed and sometimes not on top of my responsibilities and that just needs to change. If I am going to work for someone in the future and have coworkers then I need to be more dependable and responsible

University Usability

Brendan--San Diego State University

Greek Life: 57.4 seconds to find the greek life section on the website
Tuition: 31.3 seconds.

I asked Brendan to find greek life and tuition on the website. I expected him to find it a lot faster than he did but he was using his iphone so he didn't go as fast as I thought he would. Actual results are above.

My conclusion that every college websites are pretty easy to get around.

Team Report Reflection

I think our group was successful. I felt like we were successful because we all got along and because of that we were all willing to put effort into our assigned sections of the project. Also, we all thought our idea was a really good one so that made it easier to want to do the work for the project.

In the beginning two huge challenges were that one, some of the group were unable to meet at the designated times so that made it challenging because we had to be in contact by email, which was fine, but got a little confusing at times. Also, another challenge we faced was someone not stepping up and being the leader of the group because we definitely needed some guidance and a push in the right direction.

By the end of the project I think our biggest challenge was that people got lazy and forgot about deadlines and it became one person doing a lot of the work. I think the reason people got lazy was because the deadlines kept getting pushed back and then no one could remember what was due when. We had to keep reminding each other and it just got a little tense at one point.

We overcame the 2 challenges from the beginning because one we finally realized that we don't need to do every part of the project with everyone in the group. People ended up breaking off and doing their own part which helped because not all of us had time to do everything together. This worked out well for us because it ended up being easier to put everything together in the end. We also stayed in contact over email and everything we had we sent to each other. Everyone was always on the same page. I think Gary finally stepped up to guide and help us get to where we needed to be. He made sure that we gave him everything at one time so that he could put everything together and make it look professional.

As for the last challenge I don't think we overcame it, but fortunately the project is pretty much over. Like I said before I think the deadlines had a lot to do with this last challenge. In the beginning we had everything done by each deadline, but once they all started getting pushed back we started getting more lazy and forgetting about them.

My contributions to the project were helping with the survey and writing up the Solutions section of the proposal. I think I was successful. Gary did all the editing for the proposal and I'm pretty sure didn't change much of my section.

I don't think I would do anything differently. I was very happy with the group and all of their contributions and I think we did the best that we could in the time given. I think I would probably try and step up more and put more effort into the project.

I would give my team an A because not only did we work well together as a team but we also worked with all the challenges that we faced. I think everyone made an effort to make our proposal look and sound professional.

What I need to know

I think the only thing I'm concerned with is the resume/cover letter that we have to do. The type of job that I could see myself applying for is the type of job that I have no experience in. With that being said, I don't really know how I should make my resume relevant to the job. I guess this makes me question how to start in the business to work up to the job that I would eventually like to have.

For the team project I don't really have any questions that I need to know as far as what to do. My group and I has had a pretty good idea of what our objective was since the beginning and when we've had questions about what we needed to know we've figured it out within the group.

For the CWC documents, I don't have any questions yet. To be honest, I'm still pretty behind in this assignment so once I catch up then I will start asking questions.

Team Project Status Report 2

This week Sammi and I handed out surveys in the library and Shaw. We got about 50 or more surveys back from students of all ages and majors.

Next week our group plans to meet before class and together write the final proposal. We are going to split up the sections for the final proposal and each write one or two and then put it all together.

I think we're still challenging someone stepping up to take leadership and also everyones schedules are very different and everyone is not able to meet at the same time. But we're hoping that meeting before class people will be able to come.

We're doing fine. We're keeping up with all the deadlines.

Resume Quiz

I got a 93%

Job Ad

I chose this job because it has to do with social media. I’m currently taking a PR class and I’m very interested in social media and marketing. I like having blogs and posting on twitter and facebook and I think I would enjoy the job because it sounds like I can just do it from home. It also sounds like a very easy job for right now at least while I’m still in school.

This job is a good fit because I like social media and I like promoting events and just working online. Also, like I said before, it sounds like a job I can do from home and I definitely wouldn’t mind not going into an office. I can just casually do my job whenever during the day.

Well I know that Café Zupas is a restaurant. I’ve actually never been there before. I’ve heard that it’s pretty good and also I know a person who got food poisoning from there so that kept me away. I have no interest in working for them. I think the general job description sounds like it’s right up my alley, but I definitely don’t want to work for the company.

Team Project Status Report

This Week:

This week Gary Gonzalez and I met with Mark Ferne and interviewed him about our proposal. Mark was very helpful and actually made us believe that our proposal could be approved. He gave us great information and suggested another person that we could meet if we needed more insight. I took notes and typed them up, but once I got Gary’s over email I thought his were better than mine. Also, Sammi Branch and I went over the survey. She wrote most of it up, but I helped her come up with ideas to add or discussed with her to take something out that wasn’t needed in the survey.

Next Week:

Sammi Branch and I will be managing and handing out the survey on campus. We will also go over the results and prepare them for our next group meeting. At the group meeting Gary and I will talk about the information we got from the interview and also Sammi and I will review all the survey answer with everyone in the group. Everyone else will contribute their research that they conducted and then we can move forward to the next step of our project.

Challenges:

The challenge that I’m facing is that my schedule isn’t the most flexible. I haven’t been able to meet with the group outside of class yet because I work every weekend all weekend and the group meets on Sundays.

This is also a challenge for the group because it affects them. They have to go out of their way to email me the information that I missed at the group meeting. Since I can’t attend the group meetings I can’t contribute in the write-ups or even suggest ideas. I have to do everything outside of class and group meetings.

Help:

I don’t think we need any help. We are getting everything done and on time, it just takes us a little longer to figure out who is going to participate in that part of the project.

Team Proposal reflection

This project was my first group project of the semester. I think we were all trying to get in the groove of things and learning how everyone works with each other. We realized that we all get along and that made it easier for group members to feel comfortable to contribute ideas. Also it was easier to let each other know if we wouldn’t be able to make it to meetings.

A challenge that we faced was that not everyone was available to come to group meetings and there were a lot of emails and texts sent between us informing the rest of the group of what was left to be done. We overcome this by group members assigning themselves things to do that needed to get done. This was actually successful for us because then the same people weren’t doing all the work. This was also successful because the people who assigned themselves things to do were able to get them done on their own time instead of always having them done at the group meetings.

Gary Gonzalez and I handled the interview with Mark Ferne. I wrote up some questions, but it was also very late at night that I was writing those questions so I decided to send them to everyone in the group to get some fresh ideas and see if anyone wanted to add more questions. Sammi Branch contributed with some questions for me and Gary to ask Mark and that was helpful. Also, Sammi and I worked on a survey for our project. She wrote most of it and then she had some questions of what she should and shouldn’t include and I helped her come up with some ideas. I was successful because my contributions I was able to do them on my own time. Gary and I actually did the interview with Mark a week before it was due because we both had time during the day.

I think our group needed a team leader. No one really stepped up and became a leader so we were all kind of passive about it. We were passive about who should do what which lead to us doing some things on our own. This means that we had an organization issue with our project. No one could take a stand of what they actually wanted to do for the project and so we had to figure it out along the way instead of just knowing what we each had to do and do it.

I know this always happens within a group that people will do more than others, but I think we did a good job at balancing everything out. It did turn out where some people did more than others, but I don’t feel like people were doing too much more than the others.

I really liked the group I worked with. I think Gary, Brendan, Sammi, and Lexie are really on top of their priorities and they were really helpful when I couldn’t make it to the group meetings. They were also helpful with ideas and whenever I asked for help they were quick and willing to help. Like I said it would be nice to have someone step up and take the lead and help guide the group. I would work with them again.

Pipher questions

1. 1. A good friend can provoke all three emotions. A good friend is someone who you can laugh with and laugh at, cry with, and someone you can open your heart to.

2. 2. The points I try to make to the people that I love is that I want them to know that I really do love them.

3. 3. Usually I’m kept up at night because I’m reflecting on my day and what happened during the day. I think about who I interacted with or something interesting that happened in class. Also I think about good times with friends from the past. I like thinking about things that make me happy when falling asleep otherwise I can’t fall asleep.

4. 4. I know life is true. I don’t really know how to explain that but everything that happens is life is for a purpose.

5. 5. Evil is a strong word. I don’t know much about evil because I’ve never faced evil. I do believe that people can be considered “bad people” and I think that is a step towards evil.

6. 6. There are so many things that I consider beautiful. Nature is beautiful. Although I really dislike the Utah weather sometimes, the mountains are beautiful and I could look at them for the rest of my life if I wanted to. Art is beautiful because people create art to show the beauty in their subject. The artist wants everyone to see the beauty that they see in that subject. Lastly, music is beautiful. If we didn’t have music I don’t know what our world would be like. Yeah, some music is bad and not enjoyable, but it’s there and we’re able to listen to its beauty.

7. 7. I respect most in others when they respect themselves, their surroundings and me. I don’t respect people when they can’t respect themselves and let themselves be taken advantage.

8. 8. The world excites my curiosity. I really want to travel and see the world. I’m excited and curious to see what it has to offer me.

9. 9. I’d probably try to cure world hunger.

10. 10. I want to climb an amazing mountain or cliff somewhere in the world and then sit on top of it and just admire the beauty all around me.

Gallup.com

  • How do the reports use charts and graphs? How well do you think they are incorporated in the text?
  • How do they incorporate the numbers in the text? Is it effective? Why or why not?
  • How/where do they report the methods used to gather the information?

The reports use charts and graphs to show all the numbers they've received and how they relate to the results in previous years. I think they're incorporated well because in the text they need to use the numbers to help explain the graphs and charts.

They incorporate the numbers by explaining their results and the charts and graphs. I think it's effective because when I first looked at the articles my eyes when straight to the graphs and I had no idea what they meant so in order to understand I had to read the text.

At the bottom under Survey Methods after the whole article. I think it's a good spot to put it because I don't want to read how they conducted the survey method before the article, I'm sure people would just skip that part to the article. It's good to have it at the bottom because after reading the article people will be interested to know how the survey was conducted

Revision

When I hear the word “revision” I sigh and think to myself, “what else more can I do to this paper?” Usually I’m so tired after writing a paper and I just don’t want to deal with it anymore than I already did. Since I’ve been in the Forum class and getting second chances to revise my work I’ve noticed that I need revisions to help my writing; that I’m not the world’s best first draft writer. Also, it helps my grade go up. But, I’ve noticed that some of my best work and a better grade come from revising three or more times.
When I revise my own work, first, it depends on the time of day. If it’s late at night I won’t revise it till the next day. But if I’m able to finish something before the late hours I will usually read through it right after and check for grammar mistakes. After, depending on how I’m feeling I will either move to something else like other homework, reading, or rest. If I’m really on a roll I will read through it again aloud and revise the sentences. Last I take it to someone to revise the little things that I missed because most of the time it’s hard to revise your own work because you know your style and everything makes sense even though it could be confusing to someone else.
So far this revision method I’ve got going is working out well for me. I haven’t had any problems with it. And I’ve been pretty happy with my grades from using my revision technique.

Changing the World

“By definition, writers are people who care enough to try to share ideas with other people.” What if we consider ourselves writers, but we don’t share our ideas with others? Does this mean, to Pipher, that those people aren’t considered writers?
In my experience I’ve been a quiet writer as what I like to call it. Writing stories for myself, and writing in journals. As of right now I keep my ideas, observations, and dreams to myself, but if I were to share one idea I’d share my idea of traveling for yourself and not for anyone else. When I say anyone else I mean doing a study abroad.
This is obviously all opinion about studying abroad because I’m sure it’s a great experience, but I feel you learn more when you’re traveling by yourself or with one or two other people and you can freely travel about and not have to worry about going to class. Although I’ve never studied abroad and don’t have any experience with that I have walked around cities that I’ve traveled to in America by myself and felt so free. I was able to do whatever I wanted whenever I felt like it and I felt like I learned more about the culture and the city itself. I want to share this idea with others because I think everyone should learn about culture and the traveling experience at their own pace and not have to feel restricted about going to class in a beautiful city in a different country.
I’ve always dreamt of being published in a magazine and I feel like my idea could be a good topic to write about. On the other hand I would have to travel myself to actually be credible for a published article. I couldn’t just write my opinions on traveling and expect to be published.
If I did experience traveling and wrote about it and people read it then people could learn from my experiences and could be inspired to do what I did. I personally love to read about other people’s ideas and experiences and take them into consideration so then eventually I could experience the same as they did. From reading my ideas, I'd hopefully inspire people to live it up like I did and to create their on experiences and ideas just from reading mine.

ch. 6

Firsthand observations fit very well with my Client Report project because the five of us have experienced firsthand leaving the library feeling unproductive during finals week because we hadn’t gotten in as much studying as we hoped. We’ve also experienced firsthand the library being too packed with students; it is a challenge to snag a computer. It’s like waiting in a full parking lot for someone to leave. We’ve observed other students feeling the same way. We’ve observed students leaving the library at 11 p.m. unsuccessful with their projects or papers because they need to finish them and they also require the free printers that the library offers. Also unsuccessful at getting what they needed to get done on a school computer because they had to wait so long for one. We want to study longer.

Hello Miss. Almeida,

My name is Lauryn Simmons and I am a frequent customer at your location. I go to your location because every time I’m shopping I feel like I’m welcomed. Everyone is very friendly and always willing to help when I need it. One day I was checking out and the Kraft Macaroni and Cheese had a sign in the aisle that said ten for a dollar. I had five items and usually it would take me 5 minutes, but this check out took me about twenty minutes trying to figure out the sales. The cashier and I went to the aisle where the macaroni and cheese was to verify the sale. I was frustrated because I was late for an appointment.
Although this employee was very nice and apologetic when she saw the sale sign, but it just shows the lack of knowledge of your employees of all the current and updated sales in your store. I understand your store is very big and the sales change all the time and it’s hard to keep track of everything, but I suggest giving each cashier a list of all the sales going on in the store. Also if something doesn’t ring up correct and the cashier questions it, he or she should not hesitate to ask a manager or have the bagger double check the sales.
I hope you take this letter into consideration, best of luck.
Sincerley,
Lauryn Simmons

Working in Teams

Many minds are better than one is definitely a benefit of working as a team. With more people in the group there is more chances for great, creative ideas. One person could definitely come up with some great ideas, but they may not think of all the ideas that a group with 2 or more could come up with. On the other hand, a group could be waiting on another group member to pull their own weight in coming up with an idea and that could put stress on a group. I experienced this in a previous group where we all brought some great ideas to the table and those ideas got us a good grade.

Team members help each other past the frustrations and stress of writing. This is could be beneficial because everyone helps each other out with the writing portion of the project by doing their assigned section and also help each other out by giving advice on other member’s sections. This could also be a big challenge to a group because a group member could not do as much as everyone else and then the other people have to go in a do that person’s section. This could cause stress and frustration. I was in a group and someone didn’t do as much as they were supposed to and the deadline was the next day so the rest of the group had to do what that person didn’t.

Business Letter

Hello manager of Smith’s grocery store,

My name is Lauryn Simmons and I was a frequent customer at the 21st south location when one day I was checking out and the Kraft Macaroni and Cheese had a sign in the aisle that said ten for a dollar. Not only did the employee not believe me, but gave me a hard time. This small check out took me about a half hour trying to figure something out, which also included me leading your employee to the aisle where the macaroni and cheese was. I left in a rage. I was very displeased and haven’t returned due to the bad experience.
I am not sending this for the employee to get fired, but it just shows the lack of knowledge of your employees of all the current and updated sales in your stores. I suggest, if you get the approval of your supervisor, to hold team meetings every morning informing the employees about all the sales going on in the store. Also, a very helpful tip to stress to your employees is customer service. A good company succeeds based on customer service and also keeps loyal customers. Not only would good customer service keep loyal customers, but it’d also bring in more customers.
I hope you take this letter into consideration, best of luck.
Sincerley,
Lauryn Simmons

My primary audience is the manager of the store (Einstein’s Bagels) and the secondary audience would be the assistant manager to get advice on what they should do to the employee. If they read the letter in the morning when Einstein’s is flooded with customers they would probably just put it aside until a less busy time because then they could figure out what action they wanted to take. In the morning there is obviously a lot of distractions because it is very crowded, the manager probably has to help the employees on the floor until it dies down.

How to Email a Professor Response

I agree that a student shouldn't send an email with their essay attached saying that they won't be in class. I think if the professor accepts it then the student will think that it is too easy and acceptable to miss a class period that assignments are due. Unless the student notifies the professor beforehand then I feel it is acceptable.
On the otherhand I disagree with always using your college or university email account when emailing professors. For me, using my Gmail account is a lot easier than using my Westminster email account so I feel that if you personal email account shows your full name, "Lauryn Simmons" where it says who it's from then it should be fine to use. As of right now I only use my Westminster email account to look up faculty or staff that don't know me at all just to get their acutal email addresses. As long as I state what I need they have no problem emailing me back to my personal email.
